Assessing and Improving the Numerical Solution of Atmospheric Physics in ACME

Summary

Identify convergence bottlenecks in the E3SM climate physics model and develop new approaches that recover convergence.

We are analyzing current methods for handling a hierarchy of models of climate physics to understand why convergence in time is less than expected. This analysis includes evaluation of parameterizations, limiters, and time integration methods. To address convergence limits, we are developing alternate models, more consistent parameterizations, and new time integration methods. These schemes will be tested, and performance will be evaluated within both test codes and the E3SM model.
